The 2nd annual "Careers In Gear" event is scheduled for April 10, 2012.

Amy Millard, Applications Administrator at Asante Health Systems can “see a great future” for the students from our area’s schools, and that “Careers in Gear is going to help them reach that future.”  This career expo was created by Rogue Workforce Partnership (RWP), in conjunction with local educators and businesses in reply to the workforce issues raised at the annual Business Leaders Summit. Proving to be a resounding success, over 400 students from area schools attended the 1st event last spring.  Offering a unique twist from other “career fair” type events, the occasion lent youth the opportunity to get a flavor for the workplace while participating in small group breakout sessions led by a mosaic collection of 60 business professionals in Southern Oregon. Youth were paired with a business mentor for the day, and participated in up to four workshops focused on critical thinking, resumes/applications, work ethics, and interviews. The “career expo” portion was set-up much like a business fair, and youth were empowered with authentic hands-on exposure to careers in our region.  Businesses who participated not only volunteered their day for the event but, overwhelmingly declared that they would all “do it again.”

Building upon last year’s successes and refining our shortcomings, here’s what we have planned for this year:
  • Increasing youth participants to 600 students
  • Developing a pre-registration online application process for youth participants to complete prior to the event
  • Focusing on extending invites to students engaged in career related learning (CRLE) courses (that are necessary for graduation), and emphasizing pre/post event career-centered course work in area schools.
  • Expanding RWP’s partnership with Junior Achievement to assist in augmenting business sponsorship, and facilitating this spring’s event.
We are moving forward with fundraising efforts to develop a sustainable and long-term model for growth and expansion. Our goal is for every single high school student in our region to have first-rate knowledge of workplace ethics, how to interview and find a job, and organic exposure to today’s business environment so that they have the confidence to exercise critical thinking and can be competitive in landing a job. We are working in earnest to enhance partnerships with businesses in the region to expand the opportunity for involvement in our area’s most prized natural resource- the youth.
